Bowlero

Designing Fixtures for Extreme Wear and High-Traffic Environments

Project Overview

Bowlero required custom fixtures and in-venue elements capable of withstanding constant customer interaction, impact, and long operating hours across entertainment-focused locations. The challenge was designing fixtures that prioritized durability, safety, and longevity, while remaining practical to manufacture and deploy consistently across venues.

The Real Challenge:

Unlike traditional retail environments, Bowlero locations experience continuous physical interaction—including impact, vibration, and frequent cleaning—often over extended hours. Fixtures needed to maintain structural integrity and appearance over time without becoming maintenance liabilities or safety risks.

Key Constraints:

  • Extremely high customer traffic and physical interaction

  • Impact and abuse risk beyond typical retail use

  • Long operating hours with limited downtime

  • Safety considerations in a public entertainment setting

  • Need for consistent execution across multiple locations

Why the Obvious Solution Wouldn’t Work

Lightweight or purely aesthetic fixture solutions may perform well in standard retail settings, but would fail prematurely in this environment—leading to damage, safety concerns, and increased maintenance costs. Over-engineering without regard for production and installation would have increased cost and complexity unnecessarily.

Engineering & Design Approach

Imperial approached the Bowlero fixtures with a durability-first mindset. Design decisions prioritized structural integrity at points of frequent contact, reinforced materials and fastening strategies to resist impact, and simplified forms to reduce breakage and ease maintenance. Where possible, designs balanced robustness with manufacturability to ensure consistency across locations without overcomplicating production.

Manufacturing & Installation Considerations

Fixtures were engineered to support repeatable production across multiple venues, secure fastening and installation to mitigate movement or loosening over time, and reduced maintenance intervention during normal operation. Packaging and handling were also considered to prevent damage prior to installation.

Outcome

  • Durable fixtures capable of withstanding high-abuse environments

  • Reduced maintenance and repair requirements

  • Consistent in-venue execution across Bowlero locations

  • Improved safety and longevity compared to lighter-duty alternatives

Why This Approach Worked

By designing fixtures around real-world use and abuse conditions, Imperial delivered solutions that performed reliably in a demanding environment — without unnecessary complexity or cost escalation. Bowlero represents an extreme example of the high-traffic design considerations outlined in Designing for High-Traffic vs Specialty Retail.

What This Is a Good Example Of

  • High-traffic, high-abuse environments

  • Durability-first fixture design

  • Safety-driven engineering decisions

  • Entertainment and experiential venues
