World Market

Designing Flexible Merchandising Fixtures for Multi-SKU Retail Environments

Project Overview

World Market required a merchandising fixture solution capable of accommodating products across a wide range of SKUs, shapes, and sizes — while remaining movable, visually aligned with their brand identity, and practical for store associates to manage without tools or technical expertise.

The Real Challenge:

The core difficulty wasn’t simply building a shelf — it was designing a single fixture system that could handle extreme SKU variety, store overstock out of sight, move freely within the store layout, and require zero assembly or setup from in-store staff. The solution needed to work operationally, not just aesthetically.

Key Constraints:

  • Products vary significantly in shape, size, and weight
  • Store associates needed to relocate fixtures without tools or training
  • Overstock storage had to be built in, not added as an afterthought
  • Fixture appearance needed to match World Market brand ID across product lines
  • Rollout timeline was compressed across 30 locations

Why the Obvious Solution Wouldn’t Work

Standard shelving units offer rigidity but no mobility, and off-the-shelf gondolas lack the built-in storage or SKU flexibility World Market required. A purely custom welded fixture would have solved the storage problem but created assembly and logistics challenges at scale. The solution required a purpose-built system that balanced all constraints simultaneously.

Engineering & Design Approach

Working directly with the client’s merchandising team, the fixture was designed around a segmented shelving system with hinge attachments for configuration flexibility, hidden built-in storage compartments for overstock, and integrated wheels for effortless in-store relocation. Powder coating provided durability and finish quality, while updatable magnetic graphics allowed brand and product messaging to change without replacing the fixture. Units were engineered to ship as fully cohesive pieces — no tools, no assembly, no dependencies on store staff capabilities. Manufacturing & Installation Considerations

Fixtures were designed for flat-pack-free shipping as complete, ready-to-deploy units. The hinge and wheel system allowed individual sections to be disconnected and rearranged in-store without any tools. Magnetic graphic panels were standardized for easy swapping at the store level, reducing the need for vendor involvement post-installation.

Outcome

  • Easy to merchandize across variable SKU formats
  • Flexible segmented construction adaptable to product changes
  • Built-in hidden compartments for excess inventory storage
  • No setup or tools required upon delivery
  • Effortless relocation within stores via integrated wheels
  • Successful rollout to 30 stores within four weeks of initial contact
  • 300% increase in sales at rollout locations

Why This Approach Worked

By designing around the operational realities of a high-SKU retail environment — not just the merchandising brief — Imperial delivered a fixture that performed for both the brand and the store teams managing it daily. Speed to market and zero-assembly deployment made the compressed rollout timeline achievable.

What This Is a Good Example Of

  • Multi-SKU and variable product merchandising
  • Mobility-first fixture design for retail environments
  • Built-in overstock and inventory management
  • Rapid rollout execution at scale
  • No-assembly, store-ready deployment
